Homepage > 7th Scharbeutz beach derby with Tamme Hanken
News from 21.02.11
It’s that time of year again for all lovers of riding and horses: on 27th February at 12 p.m., the 7th Scharbeutz beach derby will get underway! This very special horse race is being held right on Scharbeutz activities beach, next to the pier. In previous years, riders of all ages have provided thrilling competitions watched by several thousand spectators. There are three different races being held during the event: the young people’s race, the adults’ race and the team race. The event is being organised in conjunction with the Scharbeutz Tourism Service and the kind support of Gabriele Klein from the Hiller-Hof organisation in Lübeck.
The 400-metre-long race course runs directly along the water’s edge. With the turning point set up 200 metres into the course, the race will not only test the horses’ speed, but also the riders’ skill. The riders and horses will put in some thrilling performances amid the cheers of thousands of spectators. A prize of Euro 1,800 will again be offered as a very welcome reward for sporting ambition. However the other participants won’t go home empty-handed, since each of them will not only receive a prize ribbon, but also other small prizes.
“This year, we’re also looking forward to our special guest, who will be joining the participants of all ages,” says event organiser Christian Rogge. Tamme Hanken, the star of the NDR TV series “der XXL Ostfriese” will be coming along to watch the action. According to the proverb, true happiness is found on the back of a horse. But the horses’ happiness is often down to Tamme Hanken. The man from East Friesland gets noble steeds raring to go again. The Filsum-born “horse whisperer” is one of the most sought-after equine healers in the world. For years, he has travelled around the globe, helping mares and stallions get back on their feet from Peru to Dubai. They call men like him “bone-breakers” in East Friesland. Hanken, a skilled farmer, isn’t offended by the term ‘bone-breaker’, but he prefers to be known as a chiropractor or healer. Tamme Hanken will be holding a book-signing session at around 1 p.m. with his latest book: “Das Glück der Pferde in meinen Händen” (currently only available in German).
